The Great Passion Play

Founded in 1965 by the late Gerald L. K. and Elna M. Smith, the Elna M. Smith Foundation commissioned the development of the Christ of the Ozark statue, the first of the projects to be constructed. Produced by the Elna M. Smith Foundation, the first performance of The Great Passion Play in the vast amphitheater was presented on July 15, 1968; 28,000 people attended the play during its first season. In 2003, The Great Passion Play celebrated its 35th anniversary and its 7 millionth visitor. In 1969, Mr. Smith began to develop his vision of a life-size representation of the Holy Land. This ongoing project, The New Holy Land Tour, includes one of the world's only complete life-size reproductions of Moses' Tabernacle in the Wilderness, as well as 37 other authentic exhibits.
In 1976, the Smith Memorial Chapel was built in honor of Gerald L. K. and Elna M. Smith. Many other unique attractions, such as the Sacred Arts Center, a piece of the Berlin Wall, performances of the Parable of the Potter, and more have been added throughout the years.
